Julie Montiel and Jenn Cordova went from thinking about opening their own business to actually opening their own business in less than two weeks.

The pair are partners in A Perfect Look, a styling and skin care salon in Del Rio Plaza in Belen.

“We signed on this (the building lease) on July 1, and we were open for business 10 days later,” said Montiel, who credits her contractor husband, Bobby, for the speedy and attractive remodeling of the shop that allowed them to open so quickly.

“We worked day and night. We drove my husband crazy,” she said. “It took a lot of work,” including upgrading much of the infrastructure because the space had set idle for more than three years.

Montiel, who has been a hairdresser for 20 years, and Cordova, a licensed esthetician (skin care specialist) for four years, met while both were operating at Hair Innovations and “just hit it off.”

Montiel worked at Hair Innovations for seven years, while Cordova was there just less than a year. They and another A Perfect Look stylist, Ruth Lopez, who was at Hair Innovations for 18 years, were all effusive in their thanks and praise to that salon’s owner, Ronnie Torres.

“I want to thank say thanks to Ronnie Torres for a great seven years and the opportunity to learn the business,” said Montiel.

“Me, too,” said Cordova.

“I also want to say thanks to Ronnie,” said Lopez.

So with all their affection for Torres, why did they strike out on their own?

“I had a dream for a long time and I pursued it,” said Cordova.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, have my own business,” said Montiel.

Both admitted to being nervous about going into business under current economic conditions in Valencia County, and especially Belen.

“Yes, we were worried,” Montiel said. “We just decided to let God take it where it went. We’ve been real busy, though.”

In addition to the partners, the salon has three other independent hairdressers who rent space from them.

Their clientele includes men, women and children, and they offer a variety of styling services at what they say are reasonable prices for the area.

They are proudest that they can offer regular haircuts for children and students for $10, and for adults at $12.

Cordova offers a wide variety of skin care services including acne treatments, eyelash extensions, complete facials, different waxing styles, and “body smoothing” (exfoliation).

The salon features a private room for skin care treatments.

A Perfect Look features an attractive setting and relaxed atmosphere by design, Montiel said.

“We wanted a nice, friendly place where everybody would feel at home,” she said, “and I think we accomplished that.”

Both said they were concerned about their location at the east end of the row of shops on the south side of Del Rio Plaza, but said those concerns were unfounded.

“It’s been a really good location,” Montiel said.

And, she joked, “We have plenty of parking, just about enough for everyone in Belen.”

A Perfect Look is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are recommended. The phone number is 861-CUTS(2887).
