A suspected drunk driver allegedly drove through a stop sign in Rio Communities Thursday afternoon and rammed into an Adelante handicapped van, sending one of the five passengers in the van to a hospital.

The female driver of a Cadillac sedan was driving northbound on Howard Street at a high rate of speed when she ran the stop sign at Goodman Avenue and crashed into the van.
The van was attempting to make a turn onto Howard, said Valencia County Sheriff’s Sgt. Alan Montaño.
The Cadillac caught fire, but a fire truck from Valencia County Emergency Services arrived quickly at the scene and extinguished the fire, Montaño said.
The driver of the Cadillac, whose name was not released, was treated for injuries at the scene and then transported to University of New Mexico Hospital, Montaño said.
A blood test was administered on the woman to determine her blood-alcohol content, Montaño said. Results are  pending.
One of the five disabled passengers in the van was also taken to UNM hospital for treatment of injuries, Montaño said.
