Beauty Divas offer head-to-toe services

Priscilla Cordova had such a passion for what she wanted to do, and for opening her own business, that she admittedly put the cart before the horse.

“I rented this place before I finished school,” she said, “before I knew if I would pass the state boards.”

“This place” is Beauty Divas, a salon at 826 W. Castillo St. in Belen that Cordova opened about a year and a half ago after graduating from cosmetology school, Callas Beauty Institute in Rio Rancho, and, yes, after passing the “state boards,” the licensing examinations of the State Board of Cosmetology.

“I just had a passion to do this,” Cordova said, “and I just thought this was a great location and was in great shape, so I rented it before I was licensed to do anything.”

Meanwhile, Cordova put in 10 hour days for three months at the beauty institute to complete the 650 hours of training needed to qualify to take the licensing exams.

Cordova’s specialty is nails and pedicures.

“Nails have always been a passion of mine,” she said. “I’ve done my own nails since I was little. I decided to go to school and see what happens.”

At Beauty Divas she offers a full line of services and products in that area, including “Rock Star Gel Toes,” a process involving coating the toenails with an acrylic gel and adding the customer’s choice of adornments, primarily glitters.

“I’m the only one in Belen who offers that,” she said, an exclusive process she said lasts six to eight weeks. “It’s a lot of fun.”

When she opened the salon, Cordova rented booths to two hair stylists, one who’s husband helped remodel the place.

When both left about the same time, Cordova worried that her business would fold.

“I got nervous when the other two girls left,” she said. “Then I met Jovanna.”

Jovanna, who goes by the single name, is Jovanna Gallegos, an experienced stylist who handles everything to do with hair, including cuts, styling, highlighting, special “do’s” and color. She also does waxing.

“Jovana is amazing,” Cordova said. “With her, I don’t need anybody else.”

In addition to doing nails and pedicures, Cordova took another gamble.

“I got two tanning beds from another former employee,” she said. “I saw some potential there, so I went for it. I’m glad I did.”

Beauty Divas offers tanning by individual sessions, a package of sessions, or in unlimited time packages of 30, 40, 60 or 90 days.

Cordova said its become one of the most popular parts of her business, with male and female customers ranging in age from 17 to 68.

Cordova, who was born in Albuquerque and raised in Jarales, said business has been “great,” especially recently.

“Since December, business has picked up significantly,” she said.

She’s happy about that because even though she loves the location and her landlords, “this location has been every kind of business under the sun, and nobody’s made a go of it. Hopefully we’ll change that.”

Cordova said she’s in no hurry to expand, although she’d eventually like to add more tanning beds and “maybe more people.”

But for right now, she said, “Jovanna and I are the beauty divas.”

Beauty Divas is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
