A DRAGON ART CONTEST will be held for Biblo Baggins’ second annual birthday celebration on Sept. 23-24 at the Belen Public Library. Artists are encouraged to submit entries related to the theme of dragons. Official entry forms can be obtained at the Belen Public Library, 333 Becker Ave. in Belen. Artwork must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.
A COSTUME CONTEST will be held at Biblo Baggins’ second annual birthday celebration on Sept. 23-24 at the Belen Public Library. All costumes must be related to the themes of the books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Acceptable categories of costumes include elves, dwarves, hobbits, ents, dragons, wizards, etc. Registrations must be submitted by Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Bernie’s Fabric and Notions, Etc., 301 N. Main St. in Belen, or the Belen Public Library.

A CALL FOR ENTRIES for the Belen Art League’s photo contest and exhibition “Valencia County Images.” The entry fee is $5 for two images. The deadline to enter is Saturday, Sept. 17. The contest is open to all Valencia County residents. Photos need to be of something in the county. Entry forms are available at the Belen Art League Gallery, 509 Becker Ave. Exhibition runs Sept. 24-Oct. 8 at the gallery.

BLUE STAR MOTHERS OF VALENCIA COUNTY is preparing to send care packages to troops overseas. They will be holding a donation day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Walmart in Belen. You can drop of donations and write a note on cards that will be sent in the care packages.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 18
A PANCAKE BREAKFAST will be served from 9 a.m. to noon at the Los Lunas Fire Department, 465 E. Main St. A $5 donation will be taken. Donations help fund a variety of functions and activities throughout the year, assistance to firefighters in need, YAFL, Little League, youth boxing, and special needs functions. Donations also help to provide food and refreshments to personnel responding to emergency scenes within the village.

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING to the Belen Area Food Pantry, which depends exclusively on gifts to provide food for eligible families within the Belen Consolidated School District. The food pantry can purchase 2,000 pounds of food for less than $300. The food pantry, located at 115 S. Fourth St. in Belen, is open from 1-2:30 p.m., Monday,Wednesday and Friday; and from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Donations can be mailed or delivered to the same address.
