Belen boys, Lady Tigers win cross country titles at district
Some expected and not-so-expected performances highlighted Friday’s District 6-4A cross country championships at Los Lunas High.
Belen eighth-grader Arena Lewis won the girls individual title, and BHS sophomore Dontae Vigil won the boys crown.
Los Lunas and Belen tied at 55 for the girls team score, with LLHS claiming the first-place trophy because its No. 6 runner finished higher.
The Belen boys easily outpaced runner-up Gallup for the team title on that side.
Grants was third on the boys side to round out the state-qualifying teams. Valencia and Los Lunas didn’t qualify.
The third qualifying girls team was Gallup, which tied with its local rival, Miyamura, at 87 points.
The Valencia girls had their roughest outing of the season. Their third-best runner was 30th, and they finished in sixth place with 112 points.
Several individual runners from the county also advanced to the state championships, set for Saturday, Nov. 5 at Rio Rancho High.
