State championships: Wrestlers, swimmers make their mark on first day
Several Valencia County wrestlers and a pair of swimmers had fruitful performances at the first day of state-championsip competition Friday.
At the state swim meet, held at Albuquerque Academy, Ryan Lupi of Los Lunas High advanced to Saturday’s finals in both the boys 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. He is the first male swimmer from Los Lunas High to reach the 16-swimmer finals since Chris Peters in 2006.
Teammate Marissa Candelaria also reached the finals. She’ll compete in the 100-backstroke finals in Saturday’s half of the meet, which is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
At state wrestling, being held at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, the Belen Eagles earned the most points on the first day. Among 26 Class 4A teams, the Eagles are in third place with 88.5 points. Leader and defending champion Piedra Vista has 120, while second-place Atrisco Heritage Academy has 98.
Santa Teresa is fourth, followed by Aztec, Goddard, Santa Fe High and the eighth-place Los Lunas Tigers, who have 65 points. Valencia High is in 13th place with 51 points.
Today’s action gets under way with consolation-round matches at 10 a.m. The championship finals are set for 5 p.m.
Belen has five wrestlers in the semifinals: Patrick Armijo (113 pounds), Phillip Gonzales (120), C.J. Gonzales (138), Wyatt Robinson (145) and Anthony Burgueno (152).
Los Lunas has two wrestlers in the semifinals: 113-pounder Miguel Alvarado and 195-pounder Charles Truesdell. Alvarado will face Belen’s Armijo in the semis.
The Tigers’ Isaac Parra, a defending state champ, was beaten in the 170-pound quarterfinals by Santa Teresa’s Freddy Garciasala, 6-2.
Valencia High has three semifinalists: Carlos Montano, the No. 2 seed at 132 pounds, Shai Gonzales (138) and Ryan Hibdon (160).
