Wrestlers, swimmers cap seasons with strong performances
A number of high school wrestlers and swimmers represnted Valencia County well at state championship events this weekend.
At the state wrestling championships, held at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, the Belen Eagles took home the Class 4A second-place trophy for the second time in four years. Phillip Gonzales and Wyatt Robinson each won individual titles for the second consecutive season.
Piedra Vista easily outpaced Belen for the team title, 204.5 points to 177.5. The Eagles had nine state placers, and Anthony Burgueno suffered a narrow loss in the 152-pound final.
Atrisco Heritage Academy took the third-place trophy. Aztec was fourth, and the Los Lunas Tigers placed fifth with 135 points. The Tigers’ only individual finalist was Miguel Alvarado, who lost by two points in the 113 final.
Carlos Montaño of Valencia captured his first state title, beating Ernesto Salvidrez of Capital in overtime of the 132 final. He and a handful of other Jaguars combined for 84 points, placing Valencia 11th in 4A.
At the state swimming championhsips, held at Albuquerque Academy, two Los Lunas High swimmers competed in the finals. Ryan Lupi won his heat in the 100 boys breaststroke and was ninth overall, along with placing 13th in the 200 individual medley, and Marissa Candelaria was 15th in the girls 100 backstroke.
