For the second consecutive year, the Valencia High girls basketball team was facing an Albuquerque team in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament.

Friday, the Lady Jaguars were successful again.

The No.7-seed Jags held off visiting No. 10 St. Pius, 44-40, in a first-round game at VHS. Valencia , which won on the road in last year’s first round, will return to the Pit, where the Jags lost to Kirtland Central in the quarterfinals last season.

Tuesday at 9:45 in the Pit, the Jags’ quarterfinal opponent will be No.2 Roswell, which easily eliminated No. 15 Deming on Friday, 79-44.

The Valencia and Los Lunas boys teams are set to play 7 p.m. road playoff games Saturday, with the winners playing Wednesday in the Pit. Valencia travels to St. Pius on Saturday, while the Tiger boys head to Santa Teresa.
