The Los Lunas Board of Education completed its annual reorganization and every seat has changed.

Charles Tabet was unanimously elected to the position of president at the board meeting Tuesday.

“I think the whole board was in agreement that we all wanted to see a different part of the process,” Tabet said. “I think we have a really good working relationship, and we all bring a lot of good things to the table.”

Board member Sean Gibson nominated Tabet after talking with Chris Martinez, who is the former board president.

Martinez expressed a desire to pursue an office position with the state Public Education Department. He is already on the resolutions committee with the New Mexico School Board Association, and said with the duties of board president, he didn’t feel he had the time for another office position.

After some consideration, Martinez turned down the president nomination, and Tabet was nominated.

“I think everybody should get an opportunity to lead,” Martinez said. “I think it’s important to rotate that position.”

He said state representation is important, because of the size of the Los Lunas school district, and it helps with the district’s capital initiatives.

“When the new board took over, we lost everybody at the state level,” Martinez said. “There was nobody that sat on any of those boards … we need to get that back. We need to get that momentum back at the state level. It helps a lot when you have officers at the state level.”

Martinez will also sit on the audit committee.

“He’s got some really good contacts in Santa Fe,” Tabet said of Martinez. “I think he really did a good job leading us, and he will continue to, and maybe even take a bigger role in Santa Fe. We really want to encourage him to be able to have the time to help out the school district in that way.”

Martinez is also looking forward to getting more involved in the school farms again, he said.

Kelly Chavez, who held the position of board secretary, nominated Gibson for vice president, and he was unanimously elected to the position. Tabet appointed Gibson as the chairman of the finance committee as well.

Chavez is also on the audit committee.

The position of board secretary went to Robert Archuletta, who is also a finance committee member.

In other business, the board:

• Approved Option A school calendar, with school starting on Aug. 15 and ending on May 23, 2013. Students voted on the calendar options online and used hard copies sent home to parents;

• Approved finance committee recommendations on budget adjustments, and out-of-state travel, which some travel was at no cost to the district.
