Gonzales placed on administrative leave
Belen High softball coach Roy Gonzales has been placed on administrative leave, according to Belen Schools athletics coordinator Rodney Wright.
"Coach Gonzales will be on leave until we can check into personnel issues," said Wright in an interview with the News-Bulletin on Thursday. "He will continue in the status until our administrative investigation concludes."
While not specifically addressing any issues, Gonzales said, "I have been a little bit under the weather. It has been a little bit of both. I guess we will figure it all out when I get back (to school) on Monday."
He noted that any other issues within the program would have to be addressed by Wright as the school system's athletic coordinator.
Wright explained that he hoped to have the investigation wrapped up quickly. He noted that the administration could make no further comment until a determination would be made about concerns raised within the softball program.
In Gonzales' absence, the assistant coaches will take over the daily operations of the Eagle softball program, including conducting practice and managing the team during scheduled games.
Assistant Amber Bertrand took Gonzales' place managing the team during Tuesday's 16-5 home loss to Moriarty. The Eagles are set to compete in a tournament in Artesia this weekend, and will play their District 6-4A opener Tuesday at Los Lunas.
Noting that she did not know how long the assistant coaches would be conducting the team's operations, Bertrand said Tuesday, "I am here filling in for him today. Anything else that might be going on, I am not sure of."
The Eagles were 4-5 at the time of Gonzales' leave.
