The District 1-4A openers for the Belen High tennis teams didn’t offer much competition for the Eagle squads.

Belen’s boys and girls teams both easily won, 9-0, at Gallup on Saturday. The BHS teams are set to host Del Norte and Cibola on Saturday in the Eagle Invite at the BHS tennis complex, beginning at 8 a.m.

The Lady Eagles improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in 1-4A by beating Gallup. The singles winners were Stephanie Sander, Scarlett Griego, Marisol Armijo, Elizabeth Martinez, Brittany Gallegos and Esperanza Herrera.

The doubles teams of Sander and Griego, Elizabeth Martinez and Gallegos, and Melanie Martinez and Analicia Sanchez were victorious as well. None of the Belen girls lost more than one game in a match.

For the boys, No. 1 singles player David Garcia was ill and couldn’t compete. Niccolas Lux played No. 1 on Saturday, and like all the other BHS boys entries, he won 6-0, 6-0.

Three boys singles matches, along with two doubles matches, went to Belen by default. The singles winners in the contested matches were Lux, Andres Salas and Phillip Carrillo, and Matt Becker and Gilbert Devlin won the only complete doubles match.

The Belen boys are 8-1 overall and 1-0 in district duals.

BHS coach Regina Elkins said the Bengal players aren’t beginners, that they know how to play and to keep score, but simply haven’t built up much skill yet.

According to the schedule released by the Belen Schools athletic department, the Eagle Invite was listed as a Friday-Saturday tournament. Elkins said both Del Norte and Cibola, which competed in the invite last year, asked if they could return.

Belen’s teams are set to compete in the Albuquerque Academy Invite the weekend of April 6 and 7, and every regular-season competition to follow will be against 1-4A opponents.
