Old or new, slow or fast, whether you use it to pick up chicks or take your kids to school, the folks at Tri-Dove Automotive in Belen know what it takes to keep your automobile up and running.

“I think it’s very important to keep business local,” says Henry Sandoval, owner of Tri-Dove and Manzano Landscaping.

Sandoval says he decided to start up a mechanic shop about a year ago, because with the economy in jeopardy, people weren’t spending money on landscaping like they had in the past.

He said he realized that with people having less money in their pockets to spend on new cars, they might be putting their resources toward keeping their older cars going.

Sandoval said at Tri-Dove, you will find all the usual services, including breaks, air conditioning, struts and oil services.

“My mechanic is really good, at diesel and gas, you name it, he does it all,” said Sandoval. “He’s so good, his talent should be out there with the public and I think they should enjoy his work as much as I do. He works on my personal cars, too.”

Sandoval says his stepdaughter and wife help him run the business, and his goal is to make it a family oriented place, designed to cater to the locals with competitive prices and a quaint environment, including a reception area decked out with one-of-a-kind antiques.

His love of antiques isn’t just confined to the office though. In the bay area, customers might find Sandoval and his mechanic, Dave, working on one of Sandoval’s three classic cars in their down time.

Sandoval is the proud owner of a ’35 Plymouth coup and a ’46 and ’48 Studebaker.

Sandoval says wrenching runs in the blood. His father owned a shop, and he said he remembers spending the day marking his father’s tools, “stamping all day.”

“My dad was a mechanic, so I learned a lot from him, as far as that area,” he said. “Also we like restoring old cars. Just seeing something that people may not see as coming to life, I just like seeing them go to something from nothing, like an art form I guess. I’ve really loved old cars all my life.”

Sandoval said they will be having a special for the month of April. Call Tri-Dove at 864-3698. Tri-Dove is located at 1422 Frontage Road in Belen.
