Weekend sports results for May 4 and 5, 2012
Two Valencia County high school teams advanced in post-season action the weekend of May 4-5, while two others suffered season-ending losses.
The Valencia High baseball tea needed three games to get past Santa Teresa in a Class 4A best-of-three first-round playoff series. The host Jags, the No. 6 seed in 4A, won 4-0 on Friday, but the No. 11-seed Desert Warriors took Saturday’s early game, 2-1, to force a third game.
Valencia held off Santa Teresa 3-1 in the third game to advance.The Jaguars will face No. 3 St. Pius on Thursday, May 10, at about 2:30 p.m. at Manzano High in the 4A quarterfinals.
The No. 12 -seed Los Lunas baseball team suffered a tough season-ending series loss at No. 5 Albuquerque Academy. The Tigers bounced back from a 7-1 defeat Friday to take Saturday’s first game, 5-3, but lost 3-2 in the final contest.
In softball, playoffs feature single-elimination games in the first round.
Los Lunas, the No. 3 seed in 4A behind a complete-game no-hitter from pitcher D’Ana Gabaldon, beat No. 14 Santa Fe High 9-0 on Friday.The Lady Tigers will head to Cleveland High next week for the double-elimination portion of the state tournament, and are set to take on No. 6 Los Alamos at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 10.
The Valencia softball team, seeded No. 13, lost at No. 4 Aztec, 7-4.
