Tuesday did not start off well for the defending Class 4A girls state champion.

Taylar Jaramillo of Belen successfully defended her Class 4A golf State championship on Tuesday, following an opening round of 76 with a 77. In spite of the windy conditions at the New Mexico Tech course in Socorro, Jaramillo (153) won by five strokes over Deming’s Darian Zachek (158).

Jaramillo, a senior, led Zachek by three strokes after the opening day, but the lead was gone after the first hole on Tuesday. Jaramillo recorded a triple-bogey on the par-4 No. 10 hole to open the door for the Deming freshman.

After a couple of birdies on the first nine, Jaramillo had the three-stroke lead back when Zachek hit the ball out-of-bounds on the par-3 No. 18. She was unaware that the ball had been ruled out-of-bounds and hit her second shot. The rules violation cost Zachek three strokes, and gave Jaramillo an insurmountable six-stroke lead.

Los Lunas junior Monica Trujillo struggled on the second day after moving into seventh place during the opening round with an 88. She shot a 98 on Tuesday to tie Kirtland Central’s Summer Tsosie for 13th with a 186.

There were no complete teams or boys qualifiers from Valencia County at this year’s state championships.
