A $5 spaghetti dinner benefit and raffle ticket fundraiser will be held in June for two Belen High School graduates fighting for their lives.

For more than a year, Priscilla Barela, of Albuquerque, has battled stage IV lung cancer, and Stephanie Romero has fought breast cancer.

Funds raised from both events will help Barela pay for travel expenses associated with Barela's husband accompanying her to monthly chemotherapy treatments in Chicago, Ill., and for Barela's travel expenses to and from her Albuquerque doctor's office.

The Friday, June 8, spaghetti dinner will offer a salad, spaghetti with beef meatballs, garlic bread and punch from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley, 19381 N.M. 314 in Belen.

The five band members of Los Alegres de Belen will also be playing traditional New Mexico rancheritas, oldies, country and western music during the dinner.

The $2 raffle ticket fundraiser, ending June 30, will award winners one of 13 prizes, including a cash prize of $200 and $100 and gift certificates to local businesses, such as a set of nails from Misty and an eight-hour jumper rental from All American Jumpers.

Event organizer Mary Cordova got the idea for these fundraisers after hearing about a similar event for a Bosque resident, whose house burned down.

"I wanted to help them. It's something God laid in my heart to help them," Cordova said.
