Summer fun in Valencia County
Once again, Valencia County is filled with things for children to do over the summer break.
From art classes to recreation programs, there is no reason our children should be sitting at home every day playing video games and watching television.
Summer is a time for kids to get out and play. A time when they should be exercising their bodies as well as their brains. There are plenty of places to go, people to meet and activities to enjoy.
Every year, the Los Lunas, Belen and Bosque Farms recreation programs are open to children who want to have a little fun with their friends. While the programs are not as big as they once were, they are still a great way for kids to pass their summer days while enjoying themselves.
They will be involved in arts and crafts, sporting events, field trips and will even be able to take in a movie or two during the summer.
The summer months are also a great time for swimming in Valencia County. The two pools, at Belen and Los Lunas high schools, have summer session hours. The reasonable rates at the pools are great for families, and it’s a good way for children to exercise while having fun at the same time.
Both facilities also offer swimming lessons, aqua aerobics and swimming passes.
And then there are those fabulous reading programs in Belen, Los Lunas and Bosque Farms. Every year, the libraries offer children incentives to read over the summer months. Not only will our kids be able to have fun while reading, they’ll also be able to win a bike at the end of the season.
Both the Bosque Farms and Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts are providing something extra this year: Story and crafts in Los Lunas and other kid-friendly presentations. The Bosque Farms Library also has a number of events every Wednesday, including a visit from “Star Wars” R2D2.
And let’s not forget the Summer of Service program in Belen. This unique program, which is still looking for participants, is a hands-on science experience for children, revolving around environmental and social issues in Valencia County.
These are just a few of the activities for kids this summer. There are sports camps and a multitude of art classes in the county. If you need more information, pick up a copy of last Saturday’s News-Bulletin for a complete listing of summer fun!
