Fundraiser to help St. Mary's teacher go to Haiti
Residents are striving to send a St. Mary's Catholic School teacher to Haiti to help children at an orphanage and school in Nan Colo, Haiti.
Kathleen Hill, recipient of the 2012 Teacher of Distinction award from the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico, will be joining Jay and Kathy Peters, who are returning to Haiti later this month to continue improvements to the mountain top school.
A pancake breakfast and bake sale will be held in at Our Lady of Belen's Parish Hall from 8 a.m. to noon, Sunday, June 10, to help raise funds for Hill's travel expenses.
LaRee Baca, fundraiser co-organizer, said their goal is to raise about half of the teacher's travel expenses, which is about $800.
"She's given so much to our kids that we didn't even think about it to help her," Baca said of Hill, who has been a teacher for 41 years.
Remaining funds will be donated to the orphanage.
Last year, the Peters helped install a rainwater collection systems. The couple, along with Hill, plan to add to their work by installing two additional water tanks and more.
