Margaret J. “Lola” Pena
Margaret J. “Lola” Pena, age 92, a resident of Belen for the past 55 years, greeted her Lord and Master at the open gates of heaven on Saturday, June 16, after complications from hip surgery.
She was born in Slaton, Texas, on Jan. 31, 1920, to Lucas Jacques and Tiburcia (Aguilar) Jacques, who preceded her in death, along with her sister Frances “Pancha” (Jacques) Vela, and her five brothers, Jesus, Manuel, Jose, Faustino and Juan Jacques, all of Clovis.
Margaret was greeted in heaven by her grandson, Thomas “Tom” Dziuk; her favorite dance partner, our dad, Guadalupe T. Pena; her nephew, Don Vela; niece, Mary Esther Vela; and grand-niece, Mary Esther Romero.
Margaret and Lupe were married in Oakland, Calif., in 1940. Due to paralyzing arthritis Lupe brought his bride back to New Mexico to be with family and hope for recovery. She never left New Mexico again.
Although she had only a second-grade education, she taught herself to read and stressed the importance of learning to her three children, Cruz Anne (Robert) Dziuk of Belen, Stephen (Lenore) Pena of Belen and Christine Pena of Los Lunas.
Margaret made many friends through the small diner she owned for a number of years in Belen, and having worked as a short order cook in various other eating establishments, including Roy’s, Ruth’s, Lloyd’s, Joey’s, Gil’s Bakery and Cafe, Lillian’s and the White Way.
She had two loyal waitresses that followed her wherever she worked, Josie Williamson and Cleo Vallejos. Both will be glad to see their old friend again.
Margaret was an accomplished homemaker and seamstress. Her specialty was crocheting and she created many beautiful items in her lifetime. She was more comfortable speaking Spanish than English and was a great fan of the telenovela.
Margaret is survived by her three children and special, favorite niece and best friend, Josie Ortega of Albuquerque; her grandchildren, Mike Dziuk of Belen, Lupe Pena of Las Vegas, Nora Pena of Albuquerque, Eloy Pena of Belen and Roberta Pena-Benard of Albuquerque; great grandchildren, Tyler and Alec Dziuk of Los Lunas, Angelita Pena and Vanessa Molina of Albuquerque; her nephews, Lucas Vela and family, Jimmy Vela and family, Frances “Frenchie” (Vela) Rayburn and sons of Clovis, Irene Romero and family of Clovis, Marcella Porras and family of Edgewood, Barbara Morales and family of Meadow Lake, and Dolores Varela and family of San Diego, Calif.
Even though we had the pleasure of her company for this long, she will still be greatly missed.
A viewing will be held at Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel at 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 22, followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at San Clemente Catholic Church at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 23. Interment will follow at a later date.
Urn bearers will be her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Alec Dziuk, Angelita Pena and Vanessa Molina.
Margaret’s final resting place will be with her sister at Mission Gardens Cemetery in Clovis. She is truly home again.
