Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway donated $10,000 to six Valencia County organizations in May to add to the community's strength.

BNSF gave $5,000 to the United Way of Central New Mexico's Corporate Cornerstone Program, and $1,000 each to the Boys and Girls Club of Valencia County, La Vida Felicidad, Inc., Valencia County Literacy Council, Valencia County Senior Support and Valencia Shelter Services for Victims of Domestic Violence.

In New Mexico, BNSF employees an estimated 1,400 individuals. The largest group of BNSF employees are located in Valencia County, specifically in Belen, said Joe Faust, BNSF spokesman.

The company's philosophy is to be a good corporate neighbor by supporting meaningful organizations within the community their employees are a part of, Faust said.

"Everything we can do to support the community, the way our employees live and work is very important to us," Faust said.

The company's contributions to local organizations add to the strength of the community and the overall happiness of their employees, who participate in these organizations, Faust said.

"Our employees spend a significant part of their day at the work place," the spokesman said. "Once they go into the community they're neighbors, they are volunteers, they have children and families who participate in activities in the community and it's incumbent upon us to make those organizations as strong as possible."
