Suspicious fires in Belen
Belen fire officials are calling two fires over the weekend "suspicious."
The two separate incidents involving vacant structures within the city limits.
Belen Fire Chief Manny Garcia said one fire, on the 800 block of Cannon Road, started near the kitchen area in a vacant USDA home that is meant for low-income families.
Garcia said crews knocked down the fire before it could spread to other structures.
Another fire, directly south of the Phillips 66 Gas Station, was started at the back of a vacant structure.
Garcia said crews responded to the scene to find a pile of trash on fire.
"We are calling them suspicious because both of the houses are vacant — there wasn't anything that would have caused them to catch on fire," Garcia said. "There were no utilities (on) or anything."
Garcia did not know the exact time when either fire took place.
