3,500 Los Lunas customers without power

Los Lunas experienced a power outage for more than two hours Monday as monsoon storms swept south of Albuquerque.

Businesses and residents on the west side of the village were affected, from the Interstate 25 area east to Chavez Road, north to Isleta Pueblo and south to Valley View Drive. They were without power or street lights as PNM investigated the problem.

"Two substations are out, and so we're trying to get the customers served by the substations switched over to get their power back on," said PNM public information officer Valerie Smith on Monday.

It was believed the storm or lightning flipped off a substation switch, but after an investigation, it was revealed that the cause was a cross arm on a West Mesa to Belen transmission line that broke, said Smith Tuesday morning.

An estimated 3,500 people were without power from 2:40 to 5 p.m. Monday.

The village administrative offices had only their cell phones to rely on for operations, said Los Lunas Human Resources Director Christine Nardi, because all of the phone lines, computers and office lights were down.
