Juveniles charged with vandalizing mailboxes
Belen police are asking for residents to come forward if they believe they were victims of vandalism after several mailboxes were damaged on Wednesday night.
Belen Police Detective Sgt. Joe Portio said three juveniles are believed to be responsible for punching, kicking and knocking over at least six mailboxes around the intersections of Castillo Avenue and 10th Street and Reinken Avenue and 12th Street.
"The one thing victims have a right to is restitution that comes from out-of-pocket (costs)," Portio said.
Police charged three juveniles with six counts of criminal damage. The amount of charges could increase if more damaged mailboxes are discovered.
The boys, ages 13, 14 and 16, were not arrested and instead released to their parents.
Belen Police Officer Kiki Valdez said residents should report any suspicious activity to police.
"If you see anything suspicious, don't hesitate to call," Valdez said.
If you have any information in regards to the mailbox vandalism or believe you are a victim, call the Belen Police Department at 864-6288.
