Belen goalkeeper Alejandro Chaves had a busy day in Belen's 8-0 loss to Sandia Prep (3-0) on Saturday.

Belen goalkeeper Alejandro Chaves had a busy day in Belen's 8-0 loss to Sandia Prep (3-0) on Saturday.

He saved 17 attempted shots, but allowed four in each half to the powerful Sundevils. Belen (1-5) only managed five shots on goal during the loss.

It leaves coach Danny Krow with four days of practice between the weekend loss and hosting Moriarty on Thursday.

Krow noted that it would be the last chance to concentrate on improvement before District 6-4A play starts on Sept. 20 with Belen hosting Los Lunas.

"Our schedule is really jam-packed," said Krow. "In these four straight days of practice, we have to work on communication skills and ball handling."

Against Sandia Prep, the Sundevils got two goals each from their senior forwards Preston Houser and Michael Atkin.

Sophomore Ryan Hunter scored three times against the Eagles.

"We didn't play our best game. We made them look better than what they were," Krow said.

Belen will be at West Mesa next Saturday and then host Sandia (coached by former BHS coach Brian Weems) and Albuquerque Academy before district play starts.

"It will be interesting to see how we stack up against the other county teams," said Krow.
