Football results from Sept. 21
A Valencia County football team earned a huge win Friday, while another made a very respectable showing in a loss.
The Los Lunas Tigers rolled to a 20-7 home win over Sandia to improve to 4-0. The Belen Eagles lost to Goddard in Roswell, 27-7.
The Tigers got three rushing touchdowns from Jalen Chavez. He scored on a pair of 3-yard runs in the first half, and added an insurance score n a 21-yard scamper with about two minutes left in the game.
Sandia moved the ball well at times, but the only score for the Matadors (3-1) was on a hurry-up drive just before halftime.
Belen (3-1) held Goddard in check, and only trailed 14-7 at the half in the first meeting between the teams since the 2009 Class 4A championship game. The host Rockets (3-0), turned the ball over four times Friday, a week after winning on the road at 5A power Rio Rancho.
According the the Roswell Daily Record, Nick Kurtz scored on an 8-yard run to even the score 7-7 after Anthony Ornelas ha scored Goddard’s first touchdown. Kurtz later left the game with an injry, and Chris Peralta took over.
Ornelas finished with 152 of Goddard’s 386 rushing yards. Kurtz led Belen with 72 yards on the ground; the Eagles rushed for 162 yards.

Next weekend, Belen travels to Los Alamos and Valencia heads to Farmington for 7 p.m. Friday games. Los Lunas faces St. Pius at Milne Stadium at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.
