Jaguar boys get a mercy-rule victory
A resounding win is what the Valencia High boys soccer team got out of its trip to Gallup on Saturday.
The Jags mercy-ruled the Gallup Bengals by a 10-0 score. The win made Valencia 4-3 overall and 1-0 in District 6-4A going into Tuesday's district match at Miyamura, set for after News-Bulletin press time.
The Jaguars are set to host Del Norte for a 4:30 p.m. non-district match Thursday and to play a District 6-4A contest at Grants at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Diego Ramirez scored three goals and seven other Jaguars added one goal each in the win at Gallup. Valencia scored five times in the first 18 minutes of the match, and ended up leading 6-0 at halftime.
The match was called in the 85th minute due to the mercy rule. Gavin Sharpe, Christian Armijo Andrew Snider, Jorge Galaviz, Zeus Mendoza, Alejandro Rodriguez and David Acosta all scored in the match.
The match-ending mercy rule was invoked in the 66th minute when Acosta scored the 10th and final Jaguar goal.
Shots on goal were not kept in the VHS scorebook for the match. The Jags had 10 corner kicks to only two by the Bengals (0-10, 0-1).
The Jaguars are set to host the Belen Eagles at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
