Congratulations Gen. Salas
Earlier this week, one of our own, Andrew Salas, New Mexico’s adjutant general, was formally promoted by Gov. Susana Martinez to the rank of brigadier general.
Salas, who was named adjutant general of the New Mexico National Guard in July, is a 1976 Belen High School graduate and a Bernardo resident.
As adjutant general, Salas, commands the Army and Air National Guard and serves as commander of the State Defence Force. Along with his federal duties, Salas now serves as the governor’s principal advisor on military affairs.
We are very proud of Salas’ appointment and his accomplishments. In July, Salas told the News-Bulletin that his appointment gives him the opportunity to lead citizen soldiers and airmen in defending America and protecting the lives and property of New Mexico.
His appointment comes after a stellar military career, which includes 30 years of outstanding service. He has been awarded several awards, such as the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Along with serving as chief of ground safety and vice-commander of the Air Force Safety Center at Kirtland Air Force Base, he commanded the 332nd Expeditionary Mission Support Group at Balad Air Force Base in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In a press release, Gov. Martinez said Salas will lead with distinction and continue the National Guard’s work to defend our country and keep New Mexico safe.
“His experience as assistant adjutant general, as well as his numerous other military leadership roles, makes Col. Salas uniquely qualified to understand the role of the National Guard, both overseas and here in New Mexico,” Martinez wrote.
“We are ready for any challenge,” Salas added. “The men and women of the New Mexico National Guard are prepared to do what is right and necessary to keep our state and union safe, and we will set an example of integrity, service before self and excellence in all we do.”
Congratulations Gen. Salas for your promotion and accomplishments. We, your hometown, are very proud of you. We thank you.
