Tiger teams' matches vs. Grants are postponed

Thursday afternoon, some Los Lunas High soccer players passed a round object around Volunteer Field.

However, they weren't passing the soccer ball they had planned on using that day. They were playing a friendly game of Frisbee football among themselves, as the scheduled opponent, Grants, never showed up.

The LLHS girls and boys varsity teams were scheduled to host Grants for side-by-side District 6-4A matches. Tiger boys coach Eliseo Aguirre said he was told Grants "forgot to schedule a bus" and the matches will be re-set for 4 p.m. at Thursday, Oct. 4.

Thursday's matches were the only scheduled competition for the Los Lunas teams this week. The Tiger boys team is 6-4 overall and 1-0 in District 6-4A; the Lady Tigers are 4-5, 0-1.

That will make for a busy stretch for the LLHS teams. They're set to host Gallup at 11 a.m. Saturday and Miyamura at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Thursday's Grants matches will be followed by rivalry matches against Valencia High on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Things don't get any easier as the district rotation rolls on, with the Tiger squads taking on Belen on Oct. 9.

"That's four matches in eight days, and five in 10 days," said Aguirre. "All district matches."

Grants High athletic director Cliff Tompson was apologetic for the scheduling error, and thanked Los Lunas Schools athletic director Wilson Holland for allowing the Grants teams to re-schedule the matches.

"This is entirely on our shoulders" said Tomson. "We had athletes with their gear in front of the school, waiting for a bus. We were fearing we would have to forfeit both matches."

The Grants boys fell to 4-4 overall with a 5-2 non-district loss at Santa Fe High on Tuesday, They are 0-1 in district, having lost at home to Miyamura last Saturday, 3-1.

The Lady Pirates are 4-4 and 0-1.
