Eagle soccer wins at Gallup
The Belen boys soccer team got its third District 6-4A win of the season, and two of those wins coming over the Gallup Bengals.
In Saturday’s visit to Gallup (0-16, 0-7), freshman Chris Lovato scored two goals on the way to Belen’s 4-1 victory.
The Eagles (4-13, 3-4 in 6-4A) take on Miyamura (11-3, 6-1) on their home pitch in a game that was set to kick off Tuesday after the News-Bulletin press time.
Belen will host Valencia on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.; The Jags won the first contest this season, 3-2.
At Gallup, Manny Parra put the Eagles on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. Gallup tied the game on Jesus Nuñez’s goal in the 30th minute. Lovato scored two minutes later to put Belen ahead for good and give the Eagles a 2-1 edge at the half.
Belen was aided when Gallup kicked the ball into their own goal in the 51st minute to put the Eagles ahead, 3-1. Lovato capped the scoring in the 70th minute when converted a penalty kick.
Coach Danny Krow said after the game that his team played well in the visit to Gallup.
“We possessed the ball a lot better. Our young guys on defense did a good job clearing the ball and stepping up to win the ball instead of stepping back in defense,” said Krow.
Krow said his young team was ready for the in-county rival on Saturday.
“It would be nice to beat them,” said Krow, regarding Valencia. “The first one was close and exciting. Hopefully, maybe, this time we can pull off a win.”
