Lady Eagles hope to move to top of district standings
The Belen Lady Eagle girls soccer team continued to chase Miyamura for the District 6-4A crown with a road win over Gallup on Saturday, 8-0.
The two district leaders met at BHS on Tuesday in a game that was scheduled to kick off after News-Bulletin press time. Miyamura was 7-0 (11-6 overall) and Belen 6-1 (9-7) in district coming into the crucial contest.
It doesn’t get easier for Belen. A rematch with Valencia on the Lady Jaguars’ home pitch is set for 11 a.m. Saturday.
Belen won a thrilling double-overtime 2-1 contest and the Jaguars are waiting to get them on their home grass.
“We usually play pretty well against Valencia. We like the in-county rivalries,” said Eagle coach Wilfred Carrasco.
The Eagles started quickly against the Bengals (4-13, 0-7) in Gallup on Saturday.
Kaitlyn D’Arcangeli scored 3:20 into the game, assisted by Brandy Ortega, to put Belen up 1-0.
Belen’s Crystal Smith put one in on the right side, outside the goal box from a crossing pass from Jadyn Casillas at 14:30. It was Casillas’ turn next as she scored from the left side unassisted at 16:27
Alexis Begay took an assist from Ari Valdez for a one-on-one breakaway with the Bengal keeper at 22:17.
Belen got its final goal of he first half on an Alexis Begay shot, unassisted, inside the 38-minute mark of the first half. Belen led at the break, 5-0.
Begay added two more goals in the second half and D’Arcangeli scored the other, all unassisted.
“Tactically, Belen played its best game of the season,” said Carrasco of the convincing win. “Our team played composed, but not overconfident.”
“The score does not reflect how well Gallup played, they made us work for every goal and they appear to be a much improved team from last season,” Carrasco said. “We are looking forward to this week’s competition.”
