Loss at Grants a blow to Lady Tigers’ playoff hopes
Los Lunas’ girls soccer playoff took a shot in a disappointing 1-0 loss at Grants on Saturday.
The Tigers now have to rebound in a difficult four-match stretch to have a chance at playing beyond the regular season.
Los Lunas (6-9, 2-5 in District 6-4A) was set to travel to Gallup on Tuesday in a game that was scheduled to be played after the News-Bulletin went to press. They then turn around and make the trip back to Gallup on Saturday to face one of the district’s top teams, Miyamura. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
“We have to win out,” said coach James Torres. “And we play two of the top three teams still (in district).”
Los Lunas hosts Valencia and Santa Fe to complete the regular season.
Torres was frustrated with the close loss to Grants (6-8, 2-5).
“We pretty much dominated,” said Torres. “We had lots of shots on frame and just could not get the ball to go to the back of the net.”
Grants scored in the second minute on a Danielle Rael shot that came from the crossing pass of Caroline Bachman. The Pirates then packed in the defensive zone and abandoned any offensive efforts, hoping the single goal would hold the final 78 minutes.
“Our defense played well and had good organization in back. It is just that they had that one good shot,” said Torres, noting the Tigers’ 3-2 win earlier in the season. Los Lunas has 12 goals in district matches against Grants’ nine. “We are pretty much even with Grants, and we have the goal differential.”
Los Lunas had 10 shots on goal to Grants’ three. Several hit the crossbar, Torres said, denying the Tigers a tie.
