Los Lunas East Pee Wees are in the YAFL Superbowl
Only one Valencia County team will get to play for a New Mexico Young America Football League championship this season.
The Los Lunas East Pee Wees defeated the other Los Lunas team in the division, 20-12, on Sunday at Wilson Stadium. They advance to face West Mesa at 8 a.m. Sunday at Milne Stadium in the Super Bowl for the division.
Two other county teams were hoping to play in Super Bowl games as well, but their seasons ended in the semifinals. The Los Lunas Sophomores lost a heartbreaking 8-0 decision to La Cueva, and the Belen Juniors fell behind early in a 62-20 loss to Manzano.
The No. 3-seeded Los Lunas East team got all three of its touchdowns from Zach Vigil. The East Tigers built a 14-6 halftime lead in beating the No. 1-seeded Los Lunas main team.
West Mesa edged Cibola, 7-6, in the other Pee Wee semifinal.
The Tiger Sophomores are mostly comprised of a group that has gone at least as far as the semifinals each year. Sunday, the Tigers had one of their drives stopped at the La Cueva 5-yard line.
A La Cueva player scored the game's only touchdown on a 60-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Tigers finish the season with a 9-2 record.
The Belen Juniors were undersized in their matchup with a talented Manzano team. Belen fell behind 20-0 after one quarter and needed a late second-quarter score just to keep from being shut out in the first half. They trailed 34-6 at halftime; Belen ended the season with an 8-3 record.
In the consolation bracket for the Rookie division, Los Lunas, who beat Belen on Saturday, will face La Cueva at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Wilson Stadium.
