BHS girls soccer goes 8-2 in district
Alexis Begay scored three goals to lead the Eagle girls soccer team to a 4-1, regular-season-ending win over the host Pirates at Grants.
Kaitlyn D'Arcangeli had the other two goals in the game, one for each team.
Belen will anxiously await the Class 4A tournament bracket that will be announced around 2 p.m. Sunday. The playoff brackets will be published on the New Mexico Activities Association website, www.nmact.org.
The Lady Eagles (11-8, 8-2) finished one game behind Miyamura (13-7, 9-1) and a game ahead of Valencia (12-6, 7-3) in the final District 6-4A standings.
"We are hopeful being district runner up will allow us to play in the state tournament," said coach Wilfred Carrasco. "I am satisfied with all our players' effort this season, and win or lose, we have fun, exiting matches."
Begay opened the scoring at Grants with an unassisted gaol at 6:51. She scored again at the 23:39 mark to give the Eagles a 2-0 halftime edge.
Begay scored just 3:56 into the second half to give Belen a 3-0 lead.
"Alexis played with a sense of urgency the entire match, making runs, on and off the ball," said Carrasco of his sophomore forward.
The Lady Pirates got their only goal when a corner kick went off of D'Arcangeli and into the Eagle net.
The senior made up for the goal as the game ended, scoring on a direct kick.
Carrasco was happy with the senior's effort, along with the energy of the entire team.
