Two Valencia County high school football teams were each hoping to get another district win Friday.

Both were successful.

The Belen Eagles won a 51-30 decision in Gallup over Miyamura, while the Valencia Jaguars posted a 21-7 victory at Grants.

The two outcomes give both teams momentum going into their game with each other. Belen (6-2 overall, 2-1 in District 6-4A), winners of two straight games, play a 7 p.m. game at Valencia (3-5, 3-0), winners of three in a row, on Friday, Nov. 2.

Both county teams were able to run the ball well in Friday’s games. The Eagles rushed for more than 300 yards, with 236 of it from Xavier Armijo.

Armijo had 28 carries, and scored five touchdowns — three in the first half. Chris Peralta added a 33-yard touchdown pass to Nick Aragon to help stake Belen to a 28-16 halftime lead over the Patriots (2-6, 0-3).

Wyatt Robinson had 55 rushing yards, including a second-half TD run. Peralta was 3-of-7 passing for 77 yards.

The Eagle defense allowed Miyamura quarterback Zach Shank to complete 25-of-44 passes for 358 yards and three scores, but intercepted him twice. Belen only yielded 60 rushing yards.

Valencia trailed early after Grants recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, but the Jags quickly got on track. Nate Chavez took the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, and Anthony Gonzales ran for a 36-yard touchdown later in the first quarter.

Josh Burbank scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter. Valencia only rushed for 115 yards and completed two passes in the game, but the defense was stellar, as the Jags yielded 221 rushing yards, but did not allow the offense of the Pirates (4-4, 1-2) to score and catch up.

Grants had nearly twice as many first downs as the Jaguars. Grants committed three turnovers.

The Los Lunas Tigers beat Gallup High on the road Thursday, 56-0, and will host Miyamura at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1. See the story in our Saturday, Oct. 27 edition.
