Becker, Martinez were North-South selections
They might be opponents in the spring — but for two days in September, many of the state’s tennis players came together as teammates.
The first-ever New Mexico North-South High School All-Star Tennis match was played the weekend of Sept. 15-16 at the Tanoan Country Club in Albuquerque.
Belen High was represented by seniors Matt Becker and Elizabeth Martinez, who played for the South.
High school seniors, boys and girls, were nominated by their coaches and selected by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association to represent their schools. The dividing line was Interstate 40.
The matches played were mixed doubles, girls and boys doubles, and girls and boys singles. The North won the event, 12-3.
The South All-Stars were coached by Jimmy Crawford from Lovington, and Ryan Galindo from Carlsbad. Their players were Becker, Martinez, Will Renfeld of Albuquerque High, Matt Gearyof Alamogordo, Helen Chiou, Eliana Garcia, and Cody Watts of Carlsbad, Amber Seay of Hobbs, Ryan Maki of Mayfield, and Cameron Crawford, Jacinda Hatfield and Kaitlyn Crow of Lovington.
The North All-Stars were coached by Dick Johnson from La Cueva High and Pat McGrath from Farmington High. Their players were Andrew Patton of Bosque Prep; Robert Byatt and Will Yoder from Eldorado, Molly Merrion of Farmington High, Ingrid Chavez of La Cueva, Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff and Madeline Margevicius of Los Alamos, Christian Fitzgerald, Shepard Moore, and Jeff Sanchez from Sandia and Terese Martinez of Valley.
