Aguirre’s move to VHS is among LL Schools changes
A number of personnel actions have been taken recently to fill voids in Los Lunas Schools athletic roles.
The most significant move involves veteran coach Eliseo Aguirre. After 14 years as the Los Lunas High boys soccer coach, Aguirre resigned after the Tigers’ state-quarterfinal run ended last week, and took over Monday as the new Valencia High athletic coordinator.
Aguirre takes over for Diana Herbst, who had only been appointed as the school’s coordinator over the summer. She is still listed on the district’s website as one of Valencia’s two vice principals.
Aguirre’s Tiger boys soccer teams won 156 matches under his command. The Tigers went 15-7 this fall, won the first district championship in team history, and reached the second round of the playoffs for the first time in recent memory.
Aguirre was the athletic coordinator at Los Lunas High for about half of the 2010-11 school year, after Avilio Chavez resigned close to the holidays. He has also helped coach girls basketball.
The other main development involves the long-awaited hiring of track and field coaches for Valencia. VHS principal Andrew Saiz announced Aaron Padilla will coach the Lady Jaguars, and Wes Rogers will coach the Valencia boys.
Padilla is the brother of VHS cross country (and formerly, girls track) coach Lynette Padilla, and the son of longtime Los Lunas coach Larry Padilla. Aaron Padilla has assisted at Valencia in track and cross country since 2009.
He was one of two applicants for the girls track vacancy, but the other coach, Lucas Montoya, didn’t show up for the interview, according to Saiz.
Rogers is a social studies teacher at VHS. He coached the boys track teams in 2007-08 and 2008-09 before resigning, and he has also coached basketball teams of both genders.
The only other applicant for the boys position was VHS football coach Kevin Jolley.
Aguirre’s departure for VHS means Los Lunas High is still in the process of filling its athletic coordinator position. Jason Baca resigned from the position in late September.
