Chanita S. Romero
Chanita S. Romero, age 89, a resident of Peralta, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Chanita was born March 19, 1923, in Peralta. She had been battling bladder cancer since June 2012. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta.
Her parents were Isabel Garcia Stubblefield and Aginaldo “Gillie” Salazar. Her father passed away in an accidental fire when Chanita was barely 2 years old.
Chanita and her brother, Jose, were raised by their mother, Isabel, with help from Chanita’s grandfather, Ramon Garcia.
She attended Peralta Elementary School and Harwood Boarding School in Albuquerque. At the age of 16, Chanita married Jesus G. Romero, of Peralta, and together they raised six children, two daughters and four sons.
She was a stay-at-home mom, who loved her church, her husband, her children and her extended family. Everyone who has ever known Chanita agrees that she was an outstanding cook, and that one of her greatest joys was to see that nobody went hungry when she was around.
She had an amazing ability to feed large groups of people, even if she had not prepared for it she never panicked and always seemed to find a way to provide enough food for everyone at her table.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesus G. Romero, in 1997; mother, Isabel Stubblefield in 2005; grandson, Daniel Romero in 1987; and great-grandson, Joshua Romero in 2006.
Chanita is survived by six children, Sylvia Maiorano of Philadelphia, Penn., Marybelle Tabet and husband, Ronnie, of Belen, Jesus Romero and wife, Lucy, of Peralta, Kenneth Romero and wife, Mary Ann, of Peralta, Chano Romero and wife, Corrine, of Peralta, and Frank Romero and wife, Janet, of Los Lunas; eight grandchildren, Michael Kleha, Jeff Kleha, Jimmy Romero, Anthony Romero, Dorie Ann Romero, Joseph Romero, Angela Clark and Marianne Candelaria; 17 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren; brother, Jose Salazar and wife, Lucy, of Los Lunas; aunt, Celia Gurule of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Elvira Romero, of Española; brother-in-law, Ramon Griego, of Los Lunas; and sister-in-law, Jenny Romero, of Peralta. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The Romero family wishes to extend a very special “gracias” to her caretakers, Maria Caridad Cartegna and Ada Hernandez for the loving care that they provided Chanita during the last year and a half of her life.
