Tigers’ state title hopes ended on game’s final play
A 21-yard field goal by Goddard’s Kelsey Cunningham as time expired in Friday’s Class 4A state championship game ended the title hopes of the Los Lunas Tiger footbal team.
Cunningham’s field goal handed the Tigers a 17-14 loss in their first-ever state championship game appearance. A crowd estimated at about 7,000 people packed into Willie Chavez Field to watch the No. 2-seeded Tigers host No. 1 Goddard.
The Tigers finished two scoring drives with Jalen Chavez getting short touchdown runs to finish each one. The game was tied 7-7 at the half, and Chavez’s second touchdown put the Tigers up 14-7 early in the fourth quarter.
However, Goddard, which has now won eight state titles, drove for the tying score with 5:53 left in the game. The Rockets then forced the Tigers to punt, and Goddard’s game-winning, game-ending drive was aided by a contoversial pass-interference call on third down.
The Tigers end the season 12-1. Read more about their first state-finals run in our Wednesday, Dec. 12 issue.
