Jaguar wrestlers place 10th at the APS Invite
Since the Valencia High wrestling team’s lineup is probably close to being as complete as it will get, last weekend’s performance at the Albuquerque Public Schools Invite might be a fairly accurate picture of the Jaguar lineup for 2012-13.
Even without top senior Carlos Montaño, the Jags still placed three wrestlers at the 17-team tourney, held at Atrisco Heritage Academy, and earned 10th place.Valencia is idle until the Al Salazar Invite, set for Jan. 11 and 12 at St. Michael’s in Santa Fe.
Montaño had the flu and couldn’t compete. Jacob Baca, at 160 pounds, took third, as did heavyweight Nathan Jolley, and 182-pounder Ramon Fuentes placed fourth.
Nate Nash, at 152 pounds, nearly cracked the top four as well.
“Nathan (Jolley) is this close on a few moves,” said Valencia coach Tom Torres, holding his index finger and thumb close together. “Jacob needs a bit more conditioning, and Ramon can get sloppy at times. But they have improved.”
Jolley, the son of VHS football coach Kevin Jolley, was pinned in the 285-pound semifinals, but came back to beat a pair of 5A wrestlers to take third.
The sophomore pinned Devaughn Fuller of Volcano Vista in the third-place match.
Baca overtook another Volcano wrestler, Antonio Griego, in the 160-pound third place match, getting most of his points in the third period. Fuentes, at 182, was pinned in the third round of his third-place match by Chris Collins of Manzano.
Rio Grande ran away with the APS points title. Also competing for VHS were Jacob Grisham, LoriAnn Archuleta, Jacob Pino, Joseph Barela, Julian Salas, Luis Soto and Jesus Tapia.
