Lady Tigers crush West Mesa; will host tournament
Even the high standards of Los Lunas girls basketball coach Marty Zeller were met in Friday’s game against West Mesa — sort of.
After all, the Lady Tigers did hold a Class 5A team to 13 first-half points in the 70-38 LLHS victory.
“We knew we were going to change things up,” said Zeller. “And we did, but then we committed nine fouls in the third quarter. Our communication needs to be better, and we need to keep our spacing better.”
Friday’s game was played at Los Lunas Middle School due to a planned power outage at Los Lunas High as part of renovations. The high school is set to be the site of the Village of Los Lunas Holliday Classic, and the Tigers (5-1) will open the three-day tourney with a 6 p.m. game against Sandia Prep on Thursday.
West Mesa had no answer Friday for the LLHS pressure and for 6-foot, 2-inch junior Teige Zeller, who led all scorers with 25 points. Some of her 12 field goals were on putbacks, as was the case for teammate Tinaya Murphy, who added 15 points.
Monique Martinez had 15 points for 5A West Mesa (1-7), which made only 13 shots from the field and was 10-of-20 from the foul line.
Sandia Prep doesn’t figure to challenge the Tigers. The 3A Sundevils are the only team Del Norte has beaten, and Valencia handled Prep by 36 points.
The winner of Thursday’s first-round game faces either Del Norte or Socorro on Thursday. On Saturday, there will be four games on the girls side, with the championship set for about 6 p.m.
