Tiger boys fall in OT at Alamogordo
Ben Romero's heroics were enough to send Saturday's boys basketball visit to Alamogordo into overtime, but not enough for the Tigers to come home with a win.
Alamgordo outscored Los Lunas, 10-1, in the extra frame to go into the holiday break with a 67-58 win.
The Tigers (3-3) will face Aztec the first round of the Village of Los Lunas Holiday Classic, at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Romero hit two free throws with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 57-57. The visiting Tigers' defense did not allow a clean look for the Alamogordo ace Tyler Day as time expired. Day led all scorers with 27 points.
The first few possessions for the Tigers in overtime came up empty, as Los Lunas fell behind. Day had three points in overtime and hit five 3-pointers during the contest.
Jacob Holland led Los Lunas with 18 points. Dakota Eward had 12, Romero had 11 and Chris Sanchez had 10.
Neither team ever got a double-digit lead in the contest.
Los Lunas outscored the host Tigers 16-13 in the final quarter to send the game into the four-minute extra period.
Alamogordo led at the half, 36-27, but Los Lunas cut the lead to 44-43 by the end of the third quarter.
Los Lunas will be the host team for this week's Village of Los Lunas tournament. They'll face Del Norte or Centennial in the second round.
The tourney concludes Saturday, with the championship game slated for about 7:30 p.m.
