Belen boys fall to PVHS in Roswell
The Belen High boys basketball team dropped a 75-66 decision Thursday night to Piedra Vista in the first round of the Poe Corn Classic in Roswell.
The loss made the Eagles 2-4 on the season, and put them in the consolation bracket of the tourney. They were set to face Grants after News-Bulletin press time Friday.
Belen plays either Farmington High or Los Alamos on Saturday in the fifth- or seventh-place game at 11 a.m., at either Roswell or Goddard, depending on Friday’s outcome.
Colton Lewis scored a game-high 30 points and hit three of Belen’s five 3-pointers, but it was not enough. The Panthers (5-7) converted two 3-point plays late in the game to seal it after Belen had cut PVHS’s lead to four points.
Zach Martin made his season debut, coming off an injury to score 19 points for BHS.
“We jumped on them early, but we need to be more consistent defensively,” said Belen coach Patrick Mondragon.
Piedra Vista had four players in double figures in Thursday’s game, and made 32 field goals, including five 3-pointers.
The Eagles are set to play at Albuquerque Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
