Benavidez will be coordinator at Los Lunas High
Kevin Benavidez is taking over as the athletic coordinator at Los Lunas High, effective Monday.
Benavidez has been a vice principal at LLHS since the start of the 2011-12 school year.
The vacancy was created when Jason Baca resigned from both the coordinator job and his vice-principal spot in early October, as he left education entirely.
Benavidez, a Belen High alum, has an administrator’s credentials and a coaching background. He coached the BHS football team from 2000-01 to 2007-08, going 36-44 and leading the Eagles to four playoff appearances, a district title and one state semifinal.
Benavidez can now include athletics in his assistant-principal duties, because Baca has finally been replaced. Padilla said Los Lunas alum Alfonso Otero, who has spent many years in Kansas, is returning to the village. Otero’s wife is also from this area, Padilla said.
Like the other LLHS assistant principals, Benavidez reports to principal Dan Padilla, but he also is accountable to Los Lunas Lunas Schools Athletics Director Wilson Holland.
Otero will join Benavidez and Leslie Gurule as vice principals under Padilla. The principal said the addition of Otero and assigning Benavidez to athletics are intended to be permanent beyond the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Natalie Saiz, a counselor at LLHS, held the title of coordinator for the past couple of months, on an interim basis.
Benavidez has remained involved with athletics. His children, Kade and Joelle, have competed with the Belen Hurricanes Swim Team for years.
His wife, Juliette Romero Benavidez, works for the Special Services Division at Los Lunas Schools’ central office.
