Eagle wrestlers edge Santa Fe High
Even without its best effort, the Belen High wrestling team still got a win over visiting Santa Fe High on Wednesday.
Belen's 39-33 win over the Demons provide some of the least experienced Eagles some important mat time.
All three county teams are scheduled to compete in the Joe Vivian Invite this weekend. The tourney, which was set to begin Friday, has action set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals are expected to take place at about 5:30 p.m.
Belen is set to travel to Valencia for a dual at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, and will host the Leonard Kirby Duals on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Against Santa Fe High, the highlight of the night was a win by Eagle 182-pounder, according to BHS coach Lee Chaves. Duartes was making his varsity debut. In the matches that went the distance, Eagle wrestlers Wyatt Robinson (145 pounds), Danny Chavez (152) and David Martinez (195) were all victorious.
Brandon Montiel (106 pounds), Anthony Trujillo (120), Tristen Davis (126), Phillip Gonzales (132) and Diego Garcia (285) all won by forfeit,
Belen's 113-pounder, Chris Romero, along with 138-pounder Matthew Lucero and 160-pound wrestler Gabe Aleman, were all on the losing side in their matches.
