El Cerro man dragged during carjacking in Meadow Lake Thursday
A 66-year-old El Cerro man was transported to an Albuquerque hospital Thursday following what deputies believe was a carjacking along Airport Drive and Manzano Expressway.
The man, Anthony Cabera, was dragged about 130 feet by his own truck after offering a man a ride from a nearby convenience store a few minutes before, said Valencia County Sheriff's Capt. Gary Hall.
Hall said Cabera picked the man up in his white 1996 Chevy Silverado and eventually drove westbound on Airport Drive. At some point, Cabera stopped his vehicle and got out of his truck. Shortly after, the suspect, described as an Hispanic man in his 30s, slid over and got behind the wheel, Hall said.
The man sped off, dragging Cabera with him until he lost grasp of the door and fell to the ground. It is unknown which direction the vehicle went after it was last seen on Airport Drive. Hall did not know why Cabera got out of his truck.
The extent of Cabera's injuries are unknown.
"For whatever reason, (the driver) got out," Hall said.
The suspect is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds with acne on his face. Authorities are in the process of obtaining security footage from the convenient store.
Hall said the clerk at the convenience store and recognized the suspect who had put gas into a "fairly new" vehicle in the last week. Hall said the man didn't pay with a debit card, which would have helped to determine his identity.
The captain said he was not sure how authorities were called to the scene since the victim's cell phone was left in his truck.
Once the suspect is identified, he is expected to be charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and auto theft. The New Mexico license plate number of the stolen truck KLM769.
