Tiger boys hold off the Pirates, 61-49
A strong fourth quarter boosted the Los Lunas boys basketball team over Grants on Saturday.
The Tigers turned a seven-point advantage into a double-digit home win over the Pirates, winning 61-49. The win made the Tigers 12-5 overall and 2-0 in District 6-4A going into Tuesday's showdown at Gallup, set for after News-Bulletin press time.
Los Lunas is set to host Miyamura for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
The Tigers were led in the Grants game by 20 points from senior Ben Romero. Jacob Holland and Chris Sanchez each added 13 points, and Quentin Mullins had 10.
Grants (6-11, 1-1) got 10 points apiece from Orlando Ware and Ryan Garcia.
Los Lunas outscored the Pirates in all quarters except the third, and the Tigers led 45-38 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Grants, at times a perimeter-oriented team, made only three 3-pointers in the contest.
Los Lunas made 14 of its 17 free throws in the contest; Grants was 8-of-14.
After Friday's Miyamura game, the Tigers will be idle until hosting the Valencia Jaguars on Thursday, Feb. 7.
