Valencia opens softball season with home win
The Class 4A Jaguar softball girls started the season in good fashion on their home diamond on Thursday with a 3-2 win over Class 5A Rio Rancho.
Valencia is now off until Friday, March 8 when they host Moriarty. The game will be played under the lights at 7 p.m.
The Jags are scheduled to face perennial power Aztec in a double-header the next day with the first game slated to begin at 10 a.m.
The highly regarded Rams struck first on Thursday, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth. It did not dissuade Baca, who completed the game on the mound.
Valencia got the big hit of the game in the home half of the sixth inning. Dayanna Iturralde came through with a pinch-hit double to score Marissa Kittredge and Belinda Lucero. Also in the inning, Erin Sharpe walked with the bases loaded to get an RBI.
The Jags led 3-2 going into the final frame.
Baca got out of a jam in the top of the seventh to record her first win of the season.
"I can't say what will happen the rest of the season," said coach Jeff Young. "But, if it goes like today, that would be alright."
