Eagles get softball win in visit to Sandia Prep
Under new coach Ray Valerio, Belen opened the softball season with a 12-4 win over Sandia Prep on Friday.
Belen was set to visit Los Alamos on Tuesday after the News-Bulletin press time. The Lady Eagles are scheduled to host Highland in their home opener at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Pitcher Emma Gonzales was fantastic on the mound, holding the Sundevils to three hits in picking up her first win of the year after going 3-8 last year.
She contributed at the plate, also, with a double in the first inning that scored Agusta Amaro to start the scoring. The Eagles built a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Taylor Jamieson knocked in a run with a triple. Jamieson had three runs batted in on the day.
The Eagles gave Gonzales an 8-0 lead before she ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third. She allowed three hits in the game, two of which came in the four-run third.
"They played well and did the little things right," said Valerio. "There were only a couple of little miscues."
It was the start to the season the Eagle coach wanted for his team.
"If we do the little things, then we will be fine. It was a pretty good first game," said Valerio.
