Valencia drops opener at Piedra Vista Invitational
The Valencia baseball team ran into a buzz saw, facing Colorado's Fruita Monument in the opening round of the Piedra Vista Invitational on Thursday.
Fruita put up five runs in the second inning, followed by six runs in the third, to take an 11-0 lead.
Valencia responded with a couple of runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth, but that was all of the offense the Jaguars could muster in the 11-3 loss.
Cade Guthrie, Jose Galaviz and Tyler Klein all picked up RBIs for the Jaguars.
Damian Padilla was 3-for-3 with a run scored for Valencia.
Anthony Gonzales picked up the loss and only lasted two innings.
Klein came on in relief and finished the game, allowing four earned runs.
Valencia continued in the weekend tournament with a game Friday against an opponent to be determined after the News-Bulletin press time.
The tournament concludes on Saturday.
Valencia is set to host Gadsden in a Tuesday double-header on the Jags' home field.
Game time for the first of two is set for 3 p.m. with the second game to follow at approximately 5 p.m.
