Lady Tigers overpower both Valencia and Belen
A big third inning helped propel the Los Lunas Lady Tigers to a 13-4 district win over the host Lady Jaguars of Valencia on Saturday.
After a scoreless first inning, a Cienna Thompson run gave Los Lunas a 1-0 lead in the second. The Lady Jags were unable to answer with a run of their own, giving Los Lunas an opportunity to break the game open.
The Lady Tigers poured on nine runs in the third, making a mercy-rule victory look probable.
Valencia fought back, holding Los Lunas to zero runs in the top of the fourth, and putting up three runs in the bottom, to keep the contest going.
Los Lunas' Angela Duran scored in the fifth, giving the Lady Tigers an 11-3 lead.
Valencia was unable to score in the fifth inning, and Los Lunas added the final three runs in the top of the sixth.
The win brings Los Lunas to 15-5 on the season, and 3-1 in District 6-4A, Valencia falls to 13-7, and 2-2.
On Tuesday, Los Lunas traveled to Belen for another district contest, where Valencia played a road game at Grants High School on Tuesday, and brought home a 18-1 mercy-rule victory to improve their record to 14-7 overall and 3-2 in district play.
