Athletic camps, clinics and more for children in Valencia County
Several day camps will offer Valencia County youth the chance to train for specific sports this summer, ranging from tennis to football to rodeo. Here are a few of the camps and clinics taking place in the county this summer.
Belen Tennis Clinic
The City of Belen and Belen High School will sponsor the Tennis Clinic for Kids, for youth ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade with lessons on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, and tournament play on Monday, June 3. All lessons will be at the Belen High School Tennis Courts. Session 1 for kindergartners through fourth-graders takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Session 2 for fifth- through eighth-graders will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Instruction will be by BHS head tennis coach Barbara Grega with assistants Elizabeth von Toll, David Grega and Niccolas Lux. Cost for the clinic will be $30, with pre-registration at Eagle Park Community Center. The registration fee covers the cost of a T-shirt and refreshments after the tournament. BHS Boys Hoops Camp
The Belen High Schools Boys Basketball Kids Camp will be Monday, June 3, through Wednesday, June 5, at the Belen High School Gymnasium. The camp, for first- through eighth-graders, runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day with instruction from Belen High School coaches and players.
The camp features positive attitude sessions, offensive and defensive drills, half- and full-court scrimmages as well as contests in free throw shooting, jump shot shooting and layups. LLHS Girls Volleyball Camp
The Los Lunas High School Volleyball Camp will run Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 5, at the Los Lunas High School Gymnasium. The camp, for outgoing second-graders through sixth-graders, runs from 8 to 11 a.m. each day with instruction focusing on skills, drills, games and competitions. LLHS Boys Hoops Camps
The Los Lunas High School boys basketball program will be conducting two basketball camps in June. The Middle School Boys Basketball Camp for incoming sixth-graders through ninth-graders takes place from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday, June 3, through Thursday, June 6, at the Los Lunas High School Gymnasium. Campers will receive a T-shirt and basketball and will participate in competitive play as well as get skill development and an end-of-week evaluation.
The Youth Boys Basketball Camp for incoming second-graders through fifth-graders takes place from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13. Campers will receive a T-shirt and basketball and will participate in games and get skill development and an end-of-week evaluation. Pre-registration for both camps is $35; cost will be $45 for walk-up registration. Belen Youth Hoops
The City of Belen Parks and Recreation again will sponsor a summer youth basketball league for players entering kindergarten through seventh grade. Early registration will be at the Belen Community Center at Eagle Park through Friday, May 31, with late registration starting Monday, June 3. Registration takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Cost for early registration is $60 for the first child registered, $55 for the second child and $50 for any child after that. Late registration is $70 for the first child after June 1. League play will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., from Tuesday, June 25, to Thursday, July 18. For more information, contact Denise Kerns at 966-2700 or 966-2702.
VHS Track and Field Camp
The eighth annual Valencia County Youth Track and Field Camp, sponsored by the Valencia High School Cross Country team, will run from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday, June 10, through Friday, June 14, at Valencia High School. The camp is open to students in pre-kindergarten up to seventh grade and includes training, races and prizes as well as snacks for participants. Campers also will get a T-shirt for registering.

Belen Rodeo and Bible Camp
The New Mexico Rodeo School and Bible Camp is a camp for youth ages 12 to 19, running from Wednesday, June 19, through Saturday, June 22, at the Valencia County Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Belen. Campers will be instructed in saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding, steer riding, calf riding, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, calf roping, breakaway roping and team roping. Meals and sleeping quarters will be provided.

VHS Football Camp
The Valencia High School Jaguar Football Summer Camp takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, and Friday, June 28, at Valencia High School. The camp will provide youth football players with instruction in football fundamentals as well as specialty skills — all under the lights at Valencia High School.
Also scheduled to appear are former Dallas Cowboys/UNM great Don Perkins, former UNM great/current New Mexico Stars player Dontrell Moore as well as former NMSU star Denvis Manns. Registration for the camp is $35 in advance or $45 at the gate the night of the camp, or $275 per team (15 players maximum). VHS Soccer Skills Camp
The Valencia High School Soccer Skills camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 13, at the Valencia High School soccer fields. The camp, for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade, will include skill drills, games, and contests with prizes. Campers will receive a T-shirt and get snacks during the camp. Calvary Chapel Academy Girls Basketball Open Gym
Calvary Chapel Academy in Belen will offer a free girls basketball open gym from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning every Tuesday and Thursday in June at the Belen Community Center at Eagle Park. All girls from fifth grade to high school are invited.
